At the Player First Foundation, we understand that for a young person, being released from a professional football academy is more than just the end of a sporting opportunity; it is often a sudden loss of identity, structure, and aspiration. Our project serves as a structured, supportive bridge between academy football and the next sustainable stage of a young person's journey.

The Challenge

Each year, thousands of young players are released from elite development programmes with limited formal aftercare. This transition point creates a "support gap" where many experience:

  • Mental Health Risks: Increased vulnerability to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

  • Loss of Direction: A struggle to navigate alternative football pathways or re-engage with education and employment.

  • Financial Barriers: Difficulty accessing private coaching or mentoring, particularly for those from lower-income backgrounds.

Our Mission

Our mission is to ensure no player is lost from the game or their broader potential due to a lack of guidance or wellbeing support. We aim to rebuild confidence and purpose while helping male and female players aged 15-23 transition successfully into their next stage of development.

The Support Model: A Holistic Approach

The project delivers a structured programme that treats every participant as an individual through a personalised development plan.

  • Mentoring & Life Skills: Regular one-to-one and group sessions focused on resilience, communication, and goal setting.

  • Mental Health & Wellbeing: Dedicated check-ins and stress management tools to help players process release and rebuild self-belief.

  • Football Excellence: High-quality coaching and performance analysis to maintain elite standards and identify technical strengths.

  • Education & Vocational Guidance: Support in re-engaging with colleges, universities, and apprenticeships alongside their footballing journey.

Progression Pathways

Every player is supported toward a clear and realistic next step, which may include:

  • New Academies: Trial preparation and the provision of performance evidence.

  • Non-League Football: Structured progression through our network of club links and trials.

  • International Scholarships: Expert guidance on US university applications and eligibility.

  • Professional Employment: Integration into vocational training where football is no longer the primary route.
